Arnold, California: What's Happening This Week

The full-time mountain town in the middle of the Hwy 4 corridor, 4,000 ft up.

4,000 ft

Arnold sits at 4,000 feet on Highway 4, four miles from Calaveras Big Trees State Park and 30 minutes below Bear Valley. It's where Hinterhaus Distilling, Giant Burger (since 1968), Bistro Espresso, and Blue Lake Springs all live, and where most of the corridor's year-round community actually is.

Read more about Arnold

Arnold is the population center of the upper 4. About 3,300 people live here full-time, median age around 60, and the town stretches along Highway 4 from the Meadowmont meadow up past Blue Lake Springs. It's not Murphys. There are no tasting rooms on a walkable Main Street. The center of town is a Big Trees Market, an Ace, a Bistro Espresso, and a Giant Burger, and that's most of what you need.

What it does have, more than anywhere else on the corridor: real businesses run by people who live here. Nate and Bonnie Randall's Hinterhaus Distilling won Country Winner USA at the 2024 World Vodka Awards for their North Grove Vodka. Posterity Ciderworks opened a second tasting room in town in 2026, with ciders that show up on Michelin restaurant lists. Connor Davis runs Heart & Soul Country Kitchen for breakfast and lunch Thursday through Monday. Larry Geiger has been running Bistro Espresso since 2005, and it functions as the de facto town square.

Arnold is also the trailhead. Calaveras Big Trees is four miles east. White Pines Lake is five minutes off Highway 4 with a playground, a disc golf course, and a stocked trout lake. The Arnold Rim Trail runs along the canyon rim above town. There are three bike shops here for a reason. Most things close Monday and Tuesday. Plan accordingly.

It’s that time of year again! Forest School Adventure Camp is running at White Pines this summer under a new brand name, Sugar Pine! As always, children are invited to do more than just crafts or typical summer camp activities. They’re invited to wonder, explore, experiment, create, and connect with the natural world in meaningful ways. Our STEAM-powered arts and crafts classes and nature-based camps blend science, art, engineering, storytelling, and outdoor exploration into hands-on experiences designed to spark curiosity and creativity. Whether campers are examining dragonflies at the lake, watercoloring wildflowers, building flight challenges inspired by birds, or exploring forest trails, children are encouraged to slow down, ask questions, and learn through discovery and play.

About Arnold

What is there to do in Arnold, CA?

Calaveras Big Trees State Park (4 miles east), White Pines Lake with a playground and disc golf, Hinterhaus Distilling and Posterity Ciderworks tasting rooms, the Arnold Rim Trail, and Sequoia Woods Country Club golf. In winter, Bear Valley ski resort is 30 minutes east. Most visits anchor on Big Trees or Bear Valley.

Where should I eat in Arnold?

Breakfast: Heart & Soul Country Kitchen or Bistro Espresso. Lunch: Giant Burger (since 1968) or Wassup Dawg at the Meadowmont Pharmacy lot. Dinner: Sarafina's Italian (Wed–Sun, reservations), Kalamata Mediterranean, or El Vaquero on the deck. Most restaurants close Monday and Tuesday.

How far is Arnold from Murphys?

About 15 to 20 minutes on Highway 4. 12 miles. Murphys is wine country at 2,400 feet, Arnold is the mountain town at 4,000 feet. Different vibes, easy to do both in a weekend.

Do I need snow chains to drive to Arnold?

Not usually to Arnold itself, but east of town toward Bear Valley, yes, between roughly November and April. Caltrans posts chain control about a mile east of Arnold during storms. Carry chains in your trunk all winter if you're going up the 4.

What is Blue Lake Springs?

A private gated community of roughly 2,000 lots inside Arnold, with a mandatory HOA, two private lakes, an Olympic pool, tennis courts, and the Snowflake Lodge with the Blue Lake Bistro (Fri–Sat 5–8pm year-round). Open to members and their renters. HOA office: (209) 795-2357. It's the biggest community-with-facilities up here, but not the only one: Big Trees Village (Camp Connell) and Lakemont Pines (Arnold, on Tanner Lake) both have optional rec memberships with their own seasonal amenities.

Can non-members eat at Sequoia Woods Country Club?

Yes. The restaurant and lounge at Sequoia Woods (1000 Cypress Point Dr, (209) 795-1000) are open to the public, not just members. Locals' go-tos: patio lunch in summer overlooking the course, cozy lounge in winter. Monday and Tuesday pub nights run 4:30 to 7pm. Reservations after noon.
