The foothills stop where the Square at Copper Valley is the social anchor and the Tesla Superchargers actually work.

Copperopolis sits at about 1,000 ft on Highway 4, roughly 20 minutes west of Angels Camp. The Square at Copper Valley (Tipsy Frog Wine Bar, Griff's BBQ, Gold Dust Pizza & Moe's Tavern, Bandit's) is the social hub, and there are 12 Tesla Superchargers at 100 Town Square Rd, the only fast EV charging in the immediate area.

Copperopolis is the foothills, not the mountains. At ~997 ft, it's the first real stop coming up Hwy 4 from the valley, and it doesn't pretend to be Murphys or Arnold. It's a planned resort community built around golf and the Town Square, and locals up the hill will tell you it feels like its own thing.
The center of gravity is The Square at Copper Valley (100 Town Square Rd). Tipsy Frog Wine Bar, Griff's BBQ & Grill, Gold Dust Pizza with Moe's Tavern attached, and Bandit's Restaurant & Bar all sit within walking distance of each other. Copper's Java House is a block off the Square on McCarty for coffee and ice cream. Town Hall Arts on Egan Street runs a gallery, frame shop, and art classes.
Golf is the other draw. The Golf Club at Copper Valley (formerly Saddle Creek) is a Carter Morrish design that opened in 1996. It pairs with Greenhorn Creek in Angels Camp on the 'Play the Creeks' package if you want 36 holes in two days. And yes, the 12-stall Tesla Supercharger at the Square is one of the few reasons EV drivers from the Bay Area can plan a Hwy 4 trip without anxiety.

Car enthusiasts love the Hot Copper Car Show, a fundraising event for the Copperopolis Lake Tulloch Lions Club, featuring classic, custom cars, trucks and motorcycles. Worth a trip if…
- →If you're driving up from the Bay Area in an EV: 12 Superchargers at the Square (100 Town Square Rd, up to 250kW). Charge, grab Griff's BBQ or Gold Dust Pizza, keep going up the hill.
- →If you're planning a guest's stay: Copperopolis is a legitimate dinner option on arrival night. It's the first real food on Hwy 4 east of the valley.
- →If you golf: The Golf Club at Copper Valley plus Greenhorn Creek in Angels Camp is a real two-course weekend. Stay at the Copper Valley lodge or bungalows.
- →If you're a day-tripper from Stockton or Modesto: it's about an hour to the Square. Lunch, walk it off, then decide whether to push another 30 minutes up to Murphys.
- →If you just want a quiet wine bar that isn't on Murphys Main Street: Tipsy Frog is open seven days a week and isn't fighting tasting-room crowds.
Worth knowing
- ·Copperopolis sits at about 997 ft elevation. It does not get the snow that Arnold and Bear Valley get. Chain control on Hwy 4 starts much higher up.
- ·The Square at Copper Valley is the commercial center, not the historic Copperopolis townsite. The address to plug into Maps is 100 Town Square Rd.
- ·The Tesla Supercharger at 100 Town Square Rd has 12 stalls (V3, up to 250kW) and has been live since March 2021. Non-Tesla EVs need a NACS adapter.
- ·The Golf Club at Copper Valley was Saddle Creek Golf Resort until July 2019. Same Carter Morrish course, new ownership and branding.
- ·Griff's BBQ & Grill is at 304 Town Square Rd. Open Mon-Thu 11:30-8, Fri-Sun 11-8.
- ·Tipsy Frog Wine Bar is open Mon/Wed/Thu/Sun noon to 7, Fri-Sat noon to 9. Closed Tuesday.
- ·Copper's Java House (631 McCarty St) does coffee and ice cream in the same stop, which matters if you've got kids.
- ·Hwy 4 between Copperopolis and Angels Camp has been in active construction (the Wagon Trail project). Build extra time into your drive.
- ·Angels Camp is the nearest grocery (Save Mart, ~12 minutes east). Stockton is ~50 minutes west for anything bigger.
- ·Murphys is about 25 minutes further up Hwy 4. Arnold is about 45. Worth knowing if you're using Copperopolis as a base.

Saddle Creek Golf Resort was renamed The Golf Club at Copper Valley in July 2019 after Copper Valley Development Partners bought it. It's the same Carter Morrish course, same location at 1001 Saddle Creek Drive in Copperopolis. The lodge, bungalows, and Copper Grill are still on-site.
› How far is Copperopolis from Murphys or Arnold?
Murphys is about 25 minutes east on Hwy 4. Arnold is about 45 minutes. Angels Camp sits between them, roughly 12 minutes from the Square. Note: the Wagon Trail construction project between Copperopolis and Angels Camp can add time, especially weekdays.
› Is Copperopolis worth a stop on the way up Highway 4?
Yes if you need food, gas, or an EV charge before the climb. Griff's BBQ and Gold Dust Pizza are solid casual options, and Tipsy Frog is open seven days for wine. It's not a destination wine town like Murphys, but it's a legitimate dinner stop and the Square is walkable.
