New to the 4?

The guide I wish I'd had when we got our place in Arnold

Moving up full time, buying a weekend place, or shopping for a cabin to rent out? Here is what the first winter teaches the hard way, written down in advance.

Your first winter up here teaches you ten things the hard way, and none of them are written down: who plows your road, why the restaurant is dark on a Monday, what R-2 means on the sign east of town, where people hear about things before they happen.

I've had a place on Thunderbolt in Arnold since 2015. I built Hwy 4 Events because events were scattered across a dozen Facebook groups, venue Instagram accounts and flyers taped up at the Lube Room, and we kept missing them. The newcomer's guide is the same idea for the rest of life up here.

Three rules. Every place in it has a phone number or an address you can check. Where I couldn't confirm something, it says so and tells you to call. And nobody paid for a mention.

What's in the guide

New Up Here

A neighbor's guide to living on the 4, from Angels Camp to Bear Valley.

  1. 01

    The corridor in 90 seconds

Nine places, their elevations, what each is for, and the snow line that matters more than the town name.

  2. 02

    Drive times that are true

The numbers people up here use, where the phone stops working, and how to get around without a car.

  3. 03

    Things to do, by season

Top of the World, the lakes you can and can't use, paddling, bikes, OHV areas, cross-country at Bear Valley, the caves, disc golf.

  4. 04

    The week has a shape

Monday and Tuesday are the dark nights. Which kitchens stay open, which night the market is, where the wine crowd ends up.

  5. 05

    The year on the 4

Irish Day to the Murphys lighted parade, month by month.

  6. 06

Where people hear things, and how to meet them

The Facebook groups by name, the Thursday paper, and the one thing to join your first year.

  7. 07

    Winter

R-1, R-2 and R-3 in plain words, who plows your road, where not to park, when the pass closes, a part-time house in January.

  8. 08

    Owning a place up here

What trees cost in a beetle year, needles and gutters, snow on the deck, roads, sound, and part-time mail.

  9. 09

    The services page

Power, water, propane, trash, internet, mail, medical, vets, county offices and the library, each with a phone.

  10. 10

    Fire

Your evacuation zone, the alerts, the fire district, defensible space, burning, insurance in careful words.

  11. 11

    Your first 30 days

Ten-day and thirty-day checklists with the offices named.

  12. 12

Kids, renters, and if you rent it out

Schools and how they announce snow days, pediatrics, small-kid snow play, the renter's four questions, TOT and the rental ordinance.

  13. 13

What the neighbors would tell you, and the short list

Ten reality checks and fourteen places a neighbor would send you first.

Five things newcomers ask

Do I need chains to live in Arnold?

Carry them November through April if you drive east of Arnold, even in a 4WD. Caltrans posts chain control during storms and the control points move with the storm. Check quickmap.dot.ca.gov or the road line, 1-800-427-7623, before you leave.

Who plows my road?

Caltrans plows Highway 4. Calaveras County plows county-maintained roads only, and private and subdivision roads are plowed by whoever owns them, your HOA, a road association, or you. Find out which one you have before the first storm; Public Works is (209) 754-6401.

Where is the farmers market?

Murphys Community Park, 505 Algiers St, Sundays 9 to 1, roughly late May into late October. Angels Camp runs a Friday evening market, 4:30 to 7:30, June into September.

Murphys Farmers Market →
Where is the hospital?

Mark Twain Medical Center in San Andreas, run by Dignity Health, about 40 minutes down the hill from Arnold. For same-day care, Adventist Health Rapid Care at 23 N Main St in Angels Camp, weekdays.

How do I find out what's going on?

The Facebook groups and Nextdoor for the chatter, the Calaveras Enterprise on Thursdays for the record, and Hwy 4 Events for the calendar. The site checks the corridor's venues every morning, and the Thursday email is the week in one read.
